Biographies
Android 16
Number 16 was resurrected by #17 and #18, which was against Dr. Gero's orders, during the android saga. He was made from scratch, meaning that-- unlike #17 and #18-- he was not created from a human base. Therefore, he is completely artificial. However, he has some very human traits. Number 16 has a deep love for nature and doesn't fight unless completely necessary. He is killed by Cell during the Cell game, and his death triggers Son Gohan to turn Super Saiya-jin 2.
Android 17
Number 17 is one of the androids that was created to kill Son Gokou. He was one of a few androids that was created from a human base. In Future Trunks' timeline he is ruthless and kills people for the fun of it; in the timeline we know of he might beat up on another fighter, but would not kill anyone but Son Gokou. In our timeline, however, he does kick the android Dr. Gero's (his creator) head off, killing him. He has black hair, always wears a scarf, and has a sinister smile. In the end, Number 17 of the alternate timeline is killed by Mirai (Future) Trunks, and the Number 17 of our timeline decides to travel the world.
Android 18
Number 17's twin sister, Number 18 is cute yet yet extremely deadly. She was created by Dr. Gero for one purpose alone: to kill Son Gokou. Like her brother, she was created from a human base, so she is mostly human. She marries Klylin after the Cell Saga and they have a child named Marron. But how can an android have a baby? Well, like I mentioned above, she was created from a human base, meaning that she is mostly human. All androids have a bomb inside of them, and hers was removed by a wish with the Dragon Balls. Number 18 enjoys shopping, and is always telling Number 17 that she wants to go get new clothes before a fight.
Android 19
Number 19 doesn't have any real personality, and was only created to make his creator Dr. Gero into an Android as well. Like most of the other androids, he is able to gather energy through his palms. He is killed by Vegita when he became a Super Saiyan by a big bang attack. Only appearing in about 7 episodes before his violent death, I think we can safely say that he was one of the fastest dying villains in Dragon Ball Z.
Bardock
Son Gokou's father, he is only shown a few times. He was mostly just shown during the Bardock TV Special, but was also shown in flashbacks during the Furiza Saga. Bardock discovered that Frieza planed to destroy his home planet (Planet Vegeta) and he tried to stop Frieza with his evil antics. He, however, was killed trying by Frieza.
Bulma
Bulma (or Buruma) is a beautiful, sexy, blue haired technical genius. Bulma is the first to meet Son Gokou and always stands by him no matter what. Her father, Dr. Briefs, is the owner of a multi-million zeni (the unit of currency in Dragon Ball) company called Capsule Corp., making hers one of the richest families in the world. She and Yamucha always had a thing going together, but she eventually dumps him for being too "fickle." Instead, she marries Vegeta and they have two children: Trunks and Bra. I believe Yamucha described Bulma best when he said, "Bulma is not an idiot. She's just the biggest bitch in the world, that's all."
Brolly
A very strong Saiya-jin, born with a huge power. He knows Gokou since they were both babies. Brolly was tormented with chibi Son Gokou's constant crying, the result of which gave Brolly his powerful ki. His power helps him and his dad survive when Planet Vegeta is blown up. Brolly and his father wreak havoc, but Brolly is killed. Or so everyone though, he shows up again in movie #10 and is killed for good. He is however cloned in movie #11 by some mad scientists but is also killed.
Captain Ginyu
The leader of the elite group of fighters that work for Freeza known as the Ginyu Force, Captain Ginyu is a horned purple alien. He has the unique ability to change bodies with another life form, which he uses on Gokou. While in Gokou's body, he fights Klylin, Gohan, and Vegita. In the end, Gokou gets back to his normal form and Ginyu becomes stuck in a frog's body. The frog version of Captain Ginyu switches bodies with Bulma during the Freeza saga, but is quick to give her body back and go back into the frog's when Klylin and Gohan find out. The frog version of Ginyu shows up periodically through the rest of the series.
Cell
Cell, who is actually the 21st android, is one of the strongest villains in DBZ. His name comes from the type of cells that make up all matter. He has the power to regenerate if even ONE of his cells is still intact, which he demontrates when Gokou sacrifices his life to blow him up. He also has the ability to create miniature versions of himself, called Cell Juniors, which he makes from a tube on his back. He was created by Dr. Gero as the "ultimate" killing machine, namely to kill Son Gokou. He is defeated by Son Gohan when he makes Gohan a little too angry by killing Android #16. Gohan surpasses Super Saiyan, and eventually kills him.
Chi-Chi
The wife of Son Gokou, Chichi is the hero's only weakness. She is very strict and always makes her son, Gohan, study. Although when Gohan is all grown up she lays off of him to an extent. Bulma and her are good friends and always cheer their sons and husbands on at Tenkaichi Budokais together, even if they do argue a lot. Her father is the Ox King, one of Muten Roshi's earlier pupils. For some reason, everyone listens to her and makes extra sure not to make her mad since she has such a short temperature. Even if she does get mad at Gokou and boss him around, she still loves him and would do anything for him.
Dende
Dende is a young Namek who is saved by Klilyn and Gohan on the Planet Namek during the Freeza Saga. With the power to heal wounds, he is a valuable asset during the fight with Freeza. He heals Klilyn from an almost fatal stab through the stomach, and unvoluntarily helps Vegeta. Later, he proves himself worthy to be Kami (God) of the Earth. As his first duty in "office," he powers up the Dragon Balls, making the waiting period between wishes to only half a year.
Dr. Briefs
The father of Bulma, Dr. Briefs is the owner of Capsule corp. He is very rich, and is always making training equipment for the Z fighters. In fact, he created both gravity space capsules for Vegeta and Gokou (although he was somewhat forced to by Vegeta). He is always accompanied by a small black cat that, at first, looks like a beanie baby of some sort. His wife, who is only known as "Bulma's mom," is always looking at Bulma's friends, and thinks of almost every male as cute.
Dr. Gero (aka Android 20)
The last surviving member of the Red Ribbon Army, Dr. Gero is a mad scientist and the creator of the androids. He makes the androids for only one purpose, to kill Son Gokou. Dr. Gero had a deep hate for Gokou for destroying his precious army, and wanted him dead at any cost. In order to do this, he creates Androids #16, #17, #18, and #19. Dr. Gero created all of these androids after studying Gokou for years (except for the battle on Namek) so they would know all of his attacks before he would use them. Later, he gets #19 to make him into an android as well. He is killed (got his head kicked off) by his own creation, Android #17, after he annoyed the androids too much.
Frieza
Frieza is one of the most evil and powerful fighters in the universe. We first see him on the planet Namek, where he is forcing the local residents to give him their Dragon Balls so he can wish for immortality. You might notice that I'm using the pronoun 'he.' Even though the voice in the American version bares a striking resemblance to that of a female's, believe me, Frieza is male. Frieza is the leader of an organization known as the Planet Trade, who sells planets to customers after destroying all of the planet's inhabitants. Frieza was always paranoid that the legendary Super Saiyan would emerge among the Saiyans, so he destroys the planet Vegeta, leaving only four remaining Saiyans in existence. The four were Vegeta, Raditzu, Nappa, and Son Gokou (Kakarotto). Of course, Son Gokou becomes a Super Saiyan and defeats Frieza... or so we thought. One year later, Frieza, along with his father King Kold, comes to Earth in the form of a robot and threatens to destroy the world. He is then decisively defeated by a mysterious youth, a Super Saiyan, by the name of Trunks.
Gerudo
A member of the Ginyu force. Although he may be small and quite week, he has many cool techniques. Gerudo has the ability to freeze time when he holds his breath and he has many psychic attacks. Vegeta really dispites him, and eventually kills him.
Gohan
Gokou and Chichi's first son, Gohan shows phenomenal power at a very young age. The key to his strength is anger; whenever he gets extremely angry, Gohan unleashes all the power within him, surpassing even his father at times. When he was only five years old, he was trained by Piccolo for an entire year, who had seen the great promise in Gohan's strength during the fight with Raditzu. During that year, Piccolo and Gohan form a unique bond, making Piccolo a sort of second father to him. Later in the Vegita Saga, Piccolo even sacrifices his life to save his Gohan's. As he grows older , he learns to become a Super Saiyan at about the age of 12, and because he becomes enraged during the fight with Cell, he is the first to surpass the Super Saiyan level (SSJ2). Seven years afterward, Gohan enrolls at Orange Star High School where he meets his wife, Videl. Gohan and Videl have a daughter named Pan at the end of DBZ.
Gokou
The overall main character of all three series, Gokou fights for the good of others. We see him grow from a young boy with an unusual monkey-like tale to a full grown Saiyan warrior. Gokou is a second class Saiyan, a rank that is not very high in Saiyan society. One person that did not like Son Gokou (if he did, he sure didn't show it) was Vegeta. Vegeta dislikes Gokou for being stronger than him, the prince of the Saiyans. But by the end of the series, he and Vegeta become good friends, even if Vegeta still has a bad attitude towards him. Some of Gokou's greatest accomplishments include defeating Piccolo Daimaoh, beating the snot out of Freeza, and smashing Majin Buu. He was the first to become a Super Saiyan, and go Super Saiyan 3. By the end of the show, he is a fully grown man, not the little boy that he once was. But he is still loving, friendly, and most of all, forgiving. Certainly all the qualities needed to be the protector of earth... not to mention the Universe.
Goten
The second son of Gokou and Chichi, Goten is a mischievous boy that strongly resembles Gokou. Since his dad Gokou died during the Cell Saga, he grows up without father. Instead, he looks up to Gohan, his older brother, and thinks he is the greatest in the world. He and his best friend Trunks (Vegeta and Bulma's son) are always getting themselves into trouble. He and Trunks can also fuse together to become Gotenks, a strong, yet over-confident being with extremely silly attacks. Because Gokou was so strong when he and Chichi had him, Goten is born extremely powerful as well. He is able to become a Super Saiyan at the age of 7, making him the youngest Super Saiyan to date. He could have gotten much stronger, but by the end of Dragon Ball Z, he slacks off and doesn't train.
Hildegarn
A very cool, evil looking monster from movie 13. Hildegarn destroys Tapions planet and people. Hildagarn couldn't be destroyed by Tapion's people so he is split into 2 pieces and sealed up in Tapion and his brother. From there, he was then sent into space. The pieces eventually reach Earth and Hildegarn gets free and all hell breaks loose. He is killed by Son Gokou with the Dragon Fist attack.
Janeba
The antagonist of movie #12, he is a marshmallow looking creature. He loves to play around, but often goes to far. He toys around with Son Gokou for a long time, dropping the balls with evil spirits in them, creating "Mini-Janenba's", and even punching him a few times. When he transform to his true, powerful form, Son Gokou states that he's in a class of his own. Both him and Vegeta had a hard time fighting him, but then Gokou had a fantastic idea! Both him and Vegeta will fuse! Their first attempt was a failure, but their second try was a success! They then beat up on Janenba and defeat him.
Kaio-Sama (aka King Kai)
A comedian at heart, Kaio-Sama is a legendary teacher that lives on his own small planet with his pet monkey. He is one of Gokou's many trainers and prepared the young Saiyan for the battle with Vegeta at the beginning of Dragon Ball Z. After Gokou trains with him, Kaio-Sama becomes a mentor to Gokou, and is always giving him advice. He also trains Yamucha, Chaozu, and Tenshinhan (Piccolo was on the planet too, but it is debatable on weather or not he actually received training) Kaio-Sama is always making lame jokes that no one laughs at (except him), until, that is, he threatens not to give training to people with a bad sense of humor. Also, In the Japanese version, he is the one that gives the commentary at the beginning of each show (DBZ).
Kaioshin
Above Kaio-sama, and even Kami-sama, Kaioshin is the God of the Universe. We first see this short purple God while he is competing in the 25th Tenkaichi Budokai, paired to fight against Piccolo. Kaioshin wins without even trying when Piccolo surrenders for some strange reason. Then Kaioshin's true identity is revealed to the Z fighters. He is the one that tells everyone about Majin Buu, and that he needs their help to stop him. Kaioshin is extremely surprised to find out that the three Super Saiyans (Gokou, Gohan, and Vegeta) are stronger than him. He takes Gohan to his planet to train during the fight with Buu and tells him to pull out a legendary sword out of a stone (sound familiar?). Later, Kaioshin uses the Potara earrings to fuse with his assistant, Kibit
Kami-sama
The God of Earth, Kami-Sama lives on a lookout post above the earth with his assistant, Popo. At one time, he and Piccolo were one in the same, but he had to get rid of his evil half (Piccolo) to become the next Kami. He splits into two forms, one being the Kami, and the other being Piccolo. That is how Piccolo exists. That is also why if Piccolo dies, Kami does the same. Kami-Sama is also one of Gokou's many trainers, and like Kaio-Sama, is a mentor to him (but to a much lesser extent). Later, he and Piccolo fuse back together in order to defeat androids #16, #17 and #18, becoming one person again.
Kooler
Frieza's brother who seeks revenge in movie #5. Koola has abilities like Frieza, but has 5 forms instead of 4. Koola is stronger then Furiza but not strong enough for the Saiya-jin's. Koola gets blasted into the Sun by Son Gokou.
Kiliyn (aka Krilin)
Constantly ruled out as a weakling because of his short height, Klilyn is the second strongest Earthling behind Tenshinhan. Originally he is from the Orinji Temple, a buddhist sect, where he was serving as a monk. That's why he sports six dots on his forehead and goes bald by choice. Klylin leaves the temple because his superiors are always giving him beatings, and goes on to train under Muten Roshi with his best friend, Son Gokou. During the Android Saga, he forms a crush on Number 18 after she kisses him on the cheek. The two wed and have a little girl named Marron. He grows his hair out after his wife asks him to, and settles down to spend time with his family. I would consider Klilyn as the comic relief in Dragon Ball because the worst is always happening to him and he's not too smooth with the ladies.
Mr. Satan
Mr. Satan is a weak older fellow that takes all the credit after the Z fighters defeat Cell. He has won many Tenkaichi Budokais (during the period of that Gokou and friends didn't compete), and is renowned worldwide for his so-called "strength." Mr. Satan is actually pretty strong, but he is absolutely no match for any of the Z fighters or the villains they face. When he is confronted by fans, or introduced to fans at a public event, a mock-heroic theme plays that stays with you longer than you'd like it to. If he's not trying to impress the media, he's hanging out with his best friend Buu and pet dog. During the Buu saga, he was actually of some help when he stalled Buu while Gokou formed a Genki Dama (he also demanded that the people of the earth give up their energy to Gokou for his attack) to defeat the evil enemy. He is the father of Gohan's wife, Videl, therefore is Gohan's father-in-law.
Majin Buu
Majin Buu was created 300 years ago by the evil sorcerer Babidi. At one time, there were four powerful Kaioshins, until Majin Buu killed all but one. The remaining Kaioshin used the Potara earrings to fuse with Buu, thus giving him his fat appearance. He was then sealed away, only to be resurrected by Babidi's son, Bibidi. Fat Buu was not as evil as we had thought he was, and becomes friends with Mr. Satan. But fat Buu gets mad and creates another form. One being the original fat Buu, and the other, evil Buu. With the power to absorb other life forms, Evil Buu absorbed fat Buu and many of the Z fighters and became even stronger. Gokou and Vegeta go inside of him, get their friends that were absorbed out, and escape through Majin Buu's mouth. Buu is later killed by a Genki Dama from Gokou, but not before spitting out fat Buu, who spends the rest of his days living with Mr. Satan. 10 years after Buu is killed, Gokou makes a wish that he will be reincarnated into a cleansed form so he can spar with him, which happens to be a poor black child named Ubuu.
Master Roshi
Everyone's favorite dirty old man, this hermit lives on his own island with a pet turtle. He is extremely into looking at porn, staring at younger girls, and then looking at more porn (to which he gets nose bleeds from, for some strange reason). Actually, that's not all he does. He was Son Gokou's and Klylin's very first trainer, and he invented a little technique called the Kamehameha. It took him 50 years to master Dragon Ball's signature move. At one time, he was the strongest fighter in the world, but that was before he met Son Gokou. At least he still has his pile of dirty magazines to keep him busy.
Oolong
This peverted pig, also known as "Oolong the Terrible," has the power to change the appearence of his body. At first site he seems scary in one of his monsterous forms, but we soon find out that he is just a weak pig-like creature. In a way, he is a lot like Roshi, since they both watch and read a lot of porn, and tune in to women's fitness stations for the "wrong" reasons. He appears in most of Dragon Ball, but, unfortunately, he is not seen too much during DBZ.
Ox King
Chichi's father, and Gokou's father-in-law, the Ox King is a kind-hearted (and huge) man. He trained with Muten Roshi, but doesn't ever fight, and is rather peaceful. He loves his grandson, Gohan, and is always bringing him presents. After Dragon Ball (the first series) he shows up periodically, but does not maintain much of a role.
Pan
The daughter of Gohan and Videl, Pan is probably the strongest female fighter. She is born about 7 years after the fight with Majin Buu, and at the age of three competes in a Tenkaichi Budokai (which roughly translates to "The World's Greatest Martial Arts Competetition"). When Son Gokou, her grandfather, and Trunks are about to depart for outer space to look for the Black Star Dragon Balls, Pan sneaks aboard their space ship without them noticing. She just wanted a little adventure, but she wound up getting into a lot of trouble...
Piccolo
The evil half of Kami-Sama, Piccolo really isn't all that bad. At first he is extremely evil, wanting to take over or destroy the world. He attempted to kill Son Gokou on a number of occasions, each time being defeated, and each time vowing to get his revenge. Butsomething, or maybe someone, changed that. Because of Gohan (who had been training with Piccolo for a year), Piccolo learned to love, and almost completely abolished his evil. Piccolo becomes one of the "Z Fighters" during the fight with Vegeta, and protects Gohan with his life. He fuses with Nail during the Android saga in order to defeat Freeza, and stays fused for the rest of the series. Also, when Androids #16, #17, and #18 come to kill Son Gokou, Piccolo fuses back with Kami-sama in order to defeat them. Piccolo maintains a substantial role throughout all three series, and is an important asset to the show.
n/a
This shape-cahnging cat-like creature hardly ever leaves Yamucha's side. She has a loud-mouth sometimes, and tends to be a bit cocky. She was always better than Oolong at shape-changing, and she makes sure he knows it. Like so many characters, she is seen a lot at the beginning of the series, but does not show up that much toward the end.
Raditzu
Gokou's older brother, Raditzu shows up at the beginning of Dragon Ball Z. He confronts Gokou and tells him that he is in fact his brother, and that he is a Saiyan. He asks Gokou if he wants to join him in conquering the world, and when Gokou refuses, he kidnaps Gohan instead (note: He also tells Gokou that if he ever wants to see his son again, he will have to kill 100 people within a day, which was not in the American version) Gokou teams up with Piccolo to find Raditzu. Raditzu, along with Gokou, is killed during the fight by Piccolo.
Recoom
Recoom is one of the bigger, buffer members of the Ginyu Force. He has short red hair, and looks somewhat similar to Android #16. With his fancy moves to which he gives fancy names to (ie. "Recoom Boom"), Recoom manages to beat the crap out of Gohan, Klilyn, and even Vegeta. It's a shame that he was the second member in the Ginyu Force to die. In the afterlife, he, along with the rest of the Ginyu Force, travel to Kaio-sama's planet. There they find Yamucha, Tenshinhan, Chaozu, and Piccolo training. After a short fight, the Ginyu Force is kicked off Kaio-sama's planet into hell. Recoom spends the rest of his death there.
Future Trunks
From a chaotic future, Mirai (Future) Trunks comes back in time and kills Freeza bot, along with his father, King Kold. He warns the Z fighters about his future, and tells them how they can prevent any of it from happening. In Trunks' future, two androids, Numbers 17 and 18, are wreaking havoc across the globe. Surprisingly, he can also become a Super Saiyan, making him the second (in our timeline, that is) to become one. This really pisses Vegeta off, who later finds out that Trunks is his son. When he goes back to his timeline for the second time, he finds that history had not changed. But he is a lot stronger so he kills androids #17, #18, and even Cell
Trunks
The Trunks of the normal Dragon Ball timeline, he is best friends with Gokou's son, Goten. Trunks and Goten do just about everything together, from training to playing. When he is with Goten, the two tend to get into a lot of trouble. He's always planning some kind of scheme, and convinces Goten to go along with his plans. As the son of Vegeta, he has somewhat of a bad attitude, but not to the extent of his father. He is usually playful and kind. At the age of 8 he was able to become a Super Saiayn, making him the second youngest character to achieve the level. He and Goten can fuse together to become Gotenks, who takes Trunks' cockiness and multiplies it about five times. At the beginning of DBGT, he assists Gokou in finding the black star Dragon Balls that are scattered throughout space.
Videl
Gohan's girlfriend when he is a teenager (and his wife when he's an adult), Videl isn't that strong but never gives up. As the daughter of Mr. Satan, (the guy who took credit for defeating Cell) she is "considered" to be the strongest female fighter in the world. During the 25th Tenkaichi Budokai, she gets paired to fight against an unknown fighter named Supopo-Bitchi (sounds kinda like "Super bitch," huh?). She does well at the beginnig of the fight proving that she has more fighting skill than her opponent. But Supopo-Bitchi is somehow invulnerable and won't go down. Videl then gets the crap beaten out of here, a scene that is very brutal. In the end, Videl marries Gohan and they have a daughter named Pan.
Vegeta
The father of Trunks and the husband of Bulma, Vegeta shows a tough front but is full of pride. At first he is a villain, but like most villains in Dragon Ball, he is quick to join the "good" side. But even after Vegeta joins up with the Z fighters, he is still very reserved and won't accept pity. He doesn't talk to anyone much, and utterly despises Son Gokou. Vegeta can't stand him because of the simple factthat Gokou is stronger than him. So, Vegeta is constantly trying to be better, but never truely succeeds. He is the third (if you count Trunks) person to become a Super Saiyan, and one of only two to achieve Super Saiyan 4. You might be asking, "If Vegeta's heart isn't pure, how did he become a Super Saiyan?" The answer to that is simple: Vegeta does have a pure heart... it's just pure evil. He finally becomes truely good in the Majin Buu saga where we get to see a side of him that was once thought to be non-existent. He swallows his pride in a tough situation and acknowledges that Gokou is stronger than him. Vegeta might seem hard and cold on the outside... but, well, I guess he's that way on the inside too. But every series needs a badass, doesn't it?
Zarbon
Freeza's right-hand man, Zarbon is somewhat similar to the Incredible Hulk. At first he is a pretty-boy (but he's NOT British... Thank you very much English dub) with long green hair, but when he wants to, he can transform into a disgustingly ugly beast. He is killed by Vegeta at the beginning of the Freeza saga, and plays almost no role in DBZ.
